Located just a stone's throw (or should we say mullet toss) over the Alabama state line is a deli located in a quaint building that one could easily mistake for someone's home. And why not? There's a flower garden growing outside the front entrance that is lovingly tended by one of the owners J. R. Rogers. His beautiful smile says "Come on in". Folks, you won't see an angel but you have walked into a little bit of heaven. Let's start with dessert! The pies are made by Sweetie Pies in Foley and they are great. But if you are really lucky, J.R. will have made one of his fabled IRON SKILLET DEEP DISH APPLE PIES. Flaky crust three inches deep filled with Granny Smith apples loaded with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. This pie has been shipped as far as Memphis, iron skillet included! (You do have to send the skillet back and a deposit is required.) The secret to their sandwiches and soups is FRESH HERBS. Around the side of the building is a garden where herbs are grown that Simply Southern uses in their salads and soups. Want a little basil in your soup of the day? Just step around to the garden and help yourself. The owners will even let you pick a little basil or rosemary to take home with you. That's what we call true southern hospitality. All their seafood is bought in Bon Secour, and that locally bought shrimp is put to good use in some of the best gumbo on the island! Also on their menu under Ole Time Favorites is a Tomato Sandwich (they grow their tomatoes in the garden along side the herbs). On one side of the restaurant is a shop where you can buy fresh, local seafood. They also offer Buckhead Steaks cut to order. Simply Southern Deli also has a Pick-up Menu, so call ahead and let them do the work as you perfect your tan. |
